Listing References by Brigitte Yuille from Nightly Business Report (NBR)

If you are updating your resume, you will want to double-check that reference list, too. The contact information most likely has changed. So many people have been laid off or are not staying at their job as long as they have in the past.

Both the National Human Resources Association (NHRA) and Thomas F.X. Licari, president of the Illinois Recruiters Association, assure me that this list still carries weight, and has several purposes. For instance, finding out that you have a good character is nice, but employers are really questioning your references for information, such as your work ethic and accomplishments.

Here are some tips that you may already know when you prepare your list: three to five references are best, at least three should be from your supervisors or previous work associates who know your work, leave your family and social buddies out of this, and place the person who will rave about you the most first.

What if you barely have a list because you have lost contact with people, are returning to the workforce, or are searching for a job for the first time? Well, NHRA suggests that you offer copies of past evaluations. Licari says white papers that you’ve written regarding your profession, and the professional conferences where you’ve spoken about your expertise are the “new references.” Also, he also suggests leaving a professional footprint on the web that shows how you’ve interacted with the professional community. If you volunteer frequently for community organizations or professional associations, ask members if they can provide you a stellar recommendation.

Letters of references still work, but it really depends on who you ask. Licari, for instance, says he skims them. I’ve personally found that the recommendation works best when you have a supervisor write it and state that they are willing to be contacted for further information, if needed.

Most importantly, know that fudging information doesn’t work these days. Besides “Googling” you, firms will verify the information you provide through a third-party.
